MEDICATION THERAPY
MANAGEMENT SERVICES
What are Medication Therapy Management Services (MTMS)?
MTMS is a distinct service or group of services that optimize
therapeutic outcomes for individual patients. These services may
include (but are not limited to):
- A comprehensive medication review to identify, resolve, and
prevent medication-related problems.
- Documentation of the care provided
- Communication of essential information to the patient’s
primary care providers
- Verbal education and training to enhance patient understanding
and ensure appropriate use of the patient’s medications.
- Periodic follow-ups to ensure continuity of care.
How will Medication Therapy Management Services (MTMS) benefit
yourself, or a loved one?
- Adequate one-on-one time allows the pharmacist to fully
analyze patients’ current medication therapy, including
OTC medications and vitamin/herbal supplements.
- Patients gain valuable knowledge about their medication therapy.
- Careful analysis of patients’ medication therapy allows
the pharmacist to monitor for drug-drug, drug-disease, and drug-food
interactions
- Cost analyses are performed to ensure patients are treated
in the most cost-effective way.
- Dosing regimens are reviewed to increase dosing convenience
- Drug review can reduce patient discomfort and increase quality
of life
Patients will be given the opportunity to ask questions or express
concerns regarding their healthcare.
Which patients will benefit most from MTMS?
Patients who have trouble affording their medications
- Patients with multiple providers
- Challenging pain management patients
- Patients who require additional education about their medications
- Patients on more than 5 long term medications, or who has
a chronic disease state (asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure,
cholesterol, etc.)
Who is eligible for MTMS?
Anyone is eligible to participate in MTMS. However, not all insurances
cover this service yet. For Medicaid and some Medicare part D patients,
this service may be billed to insurance.
Though some insurances may not cover MTMS, participation may prove
valuable due to the potential for decreased medical costs in the
future. With close monitoring of medication therapy, MTMS may prevent
adverse drug events from occurring and may prevent serious complications
requiring hospitalization. It is worth the initial investment!

Do all pharmacies provide MTM Services?
Unfortunately, no. All pharmacists are trained to detect drug
interactions and to counsel patients on their medications. However,
the pharmacists at Iverson Corner Drug have been certified to provide
MTMS and have a structured process for interviewing patients, developing
plans, and determining patient needs to provide MTMS in an efficient
manner.

If a patient’s insurance doesn’t cover MTMS, what
will the cost be to them?
The minimum charge for MTMS is $52.00 for the first session and

of drug problems identified and face-to-face time with the pharmacist.
Pricing is based on billing used for Medicaid coverage. If their
insurance doesn’t cover this service, encourage patients
to send a letter to them today to express their interest in MTMS
and its benefit so that in the near future, all insurance companies
will cover these services.
